Vocational decision-making in student dropout: Influence of career choice on academic abandonment [Decisión vocacional en la deserción estudiantil: Influencia de la elección profesional en el abandono académico]

Freedom of career choice is a determining factor in university retention rates. The objective was to analyze the impact of vocational decisions on academic dropout rates in Ecuador. A qualitative methodology was employed, using synthetic, inductive-deductive, and hermeneutic analysis techniques to examine educational regulations. The results show that the absence of specialized career guidance centers for high school graduates, the unification of high school diplomas that eliminated specializations such as physics-mathematics and chemistry-biology, and the lack of effective government policies on vocational guidance violate the rights established in the Organic Law on Higher Education and the Constitution. It was found that 300,000 high school students graduate each year, while approximately 110,000 university places are available. It is concluded that the limitation on freedom of career choice leads to frustration, demotivation, and student dropout, representing significant economic costs for the State.
