Abstract

Objective: To analyse the comprehensive management of recurrent urinary tract infections in women, focusing on antibiotic prophylaxis and non-antibiotic preventive strategies. Method: A literature review was conducted in PubMed, BVS and SciELO of articles published between 2022 and 2025, identifying 552 references, of which 10 were included. Results: Uropathogenic Escherichia coli is the main causative agent, forming biofilms and intracellular communities that promote recurrence. UTIs mainly affect young and postmenopausal women, being associated with increasing antimicrobial resistance and complications such as pyelonephritis. Vaginal and oral probiotics restore protective microbiota. Cranberry extract interferes with bacterial adhesion. Targeted antibiotic prophylaxis based on antibiograms combined with lifestyle modifications effectively reduces recurrence. Conclusions: The management of UTIs requires a combined approach of antibiotic prophylaxis and non-antibiotic preventive strategies to reduce recurrence and prevent bacterial resistance.
