Mono chorongo como dispersor de semillas: importancia ecológica y desafíos de conservación [The chorongo monkey as a seed disperser: ecological importance and conservation challenges]

Resumen

Objetivo: Analizar la diversidad y conservación del mono chorongo (Lagothrix poeppigii) en la Amazonía ecuatoriana y su importancia en el equilibrio del ecosistema. Método: Revisión bibliográfica descriptiva sobre aspectos morfológicos, ecológicos y culturales de la especie en su hábitat natural amazónico. Resultados: El mono chorongo habita la Amazonía ecuatoriana, sur de Venezuela, suroeste de Colombia, Perú y Brasil, desempeñando papel ecológico vital como dispersor de semillas en estratos arbóreos de 12-18 metros. Presenta pelaje lanoso castaño oscuro a gris claro, longitud corporal 47-58 cm, marcado dimorfismo sexual y organización social superior a 24 individuos. Enfrenta amenazas críticas: deforestación (56.000-76.000 ha/año), caza, tráfico ilegal y enfermedades zoonóticas. Posee significado cultural para pueblos indígenas (Cofán, Shuar, Siona, Secoya, Záparos, Achuar, Quichuas) como símbolo de prosperidad y fertilidad. Conclusiones: El mono chorongo representa especie clave para la repoblación forestal amazónica.
