Abstract

Objective: To analyse the diversity and conservation of the woolly monkey (Lagothrix poeppigii) in the Ecuadorian Amazon and its importance in the balance of the ecosystem. Method: Descriptive literature review on morphological, ecological and cultural aspects of the species in its natural Amazonian habitat. Results: The woolly monkey inhabits the Ecuadorian Amazon, southern Venezuela, southwestern Colombia, Peru and Brazil, playing a vital ecological role as a seed disperser in tree strata of 12-18 metres. It has dark brown to light grey woolly fur, a body length of 47-58 cm, marked sexual dimorphism and a social organisation of more than 24 individuals. It faces critical threats: deforestation (56,000-76,000 ha/year), hunting, illegal trafficking, and zoonotic diseases. It has cultural significance for indigenous peoples (Cofán, Shuar, Siona, Secoya, Záparos, Achuar, Quichuas) as a symbol of prosperity and fertility. Conclusions: The chorongo monkey is a key species for Amazonian reforestation.
