Resumen

Introduction: The deficiency of the maxilla in the transverse direction is known as maxillary constriction. The main etiological factors of this deficiency are habits such as mouth breathing, thumb sucking, pacifier use and atypical swallowing. The procedure used to correct the maxillary transverse deficiency is called maxillary expansion and its main objective is to achieve the separation of the mid palatal suture. Objective: To evaluate dento-skeletal growth following rapid maxillary expansion in growing patients. Method: Narrative review. Results: 11 scientific articles were reviewed. Conclusion: The amount of maxillary expansion obtained in growing patients depends on the stage of sutural maturation and the type of appliance used. When performing RME with conventional appliances, a greater effect is generated at the dental level, while when combined with mini-implants, the effect is mainly at the skeletal level.
