Abstract

Objective: To analyze the abrasive effect of activated charcoal toothpastes on tooth structure through literature review. Method: Descriptive, qualitative-quantitative research. Articles from indexed journals in Google Scholar, PubMed and Elsevier (2017-2021) in English, Portuguese and Spanish were analyzed, focused on the abrasive effect of toothpastes with activated charcoal on dental structures. Whitening toothpastes available in Ecuadorian supermarkets were evaluated using the relative dentin abrasivity (RDA) scale. Results: From 237 identified articles, 13 considered activated charcoal as an abrasive agent. Seven articles met inclusion criteria: five in vitro studies and two systematic reviews. Four studies confirmed that charcoal-containing dentifrices are abrasive, while one indicated otherwise. Conclusions: Activated charcoal proved to be abrasive to dental tissues, causing enamel wear and generating dental hypersensitivity.
