Incidence of maternal deaths in Ecuador, period 2020-2023 [Incidencia de muertes maternas en Ecuador, periodo 2020-2023]

Objective: To develop an analysis of the frequency of cases, causes and sociodemographic factors that affect the behavior of maternal deaths in Ecuador during 2020-2023. Method: Observational, analytical and cross-sectional study through review of 260 epidemiological bulletins from the Ministry of Health, articles in Scielo and PubMed. Variables of age, education, ethnicity, marital status, residence and province of occurrence were analyzed. Results: Maternal mortality decreased from 163 cases in 2020 to 83 in 2023. Zone 8 (Guayas) presented the highest incidence with 32.53% in 2023. The most affected age group was 30-34 years. The main causes were hypertensive disorders, indirect non-obstetric causes and obstetric hemorrhages. Conclusions: Maternal mortality in Ecuador requires coordinated multisectoral action. Despite the observed reduction, rates remain concerning and demand strengthening of preventive strategies and improved access to quality maternal health services.
