Oral rehabilitation with overdenture on natural teeth: conservative alternative [Rehabilitación oral con sobredentadura sobre dientes naturales: alternativa conservadora]

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of oral rehabilitation through overdenture on natural teeth as a conservative alternative for partially edentulous patients. Method: A descriptive study was conducted that included a bibliographic review of the topic and analysis of a clinical case of a 71-year-old male patient with total superior and partial inferior edentulism. A survey was applied to 42 tenth-semester dentistry students to assess knowledge about overdentures. Results: 66.7% of students could explain what an overdenture is, although 66.7% had not received specific training on the topic. The clinical case demonstrated successful inferior overdenture rehabilitation with metallic copings and VeraBond bar, preserving abutment teeth 3.3, 4.3, 3.5 and 4.5. Conclusions: Overdenture represents an effective conservative alternative that preserves alveolar bone, improves prosthetic retention, stability and support, maintaining proprioceptive impulses from periodontal receptors.
