Knowledge level about human papillomavirus associated with oropharyngeal cancer in dentistry students [Nivel de conocimiento sobre virus del papiloma humano asociado al cáncer orofaríngeo en estudiantes de odontología]

Objective: To determine the knowledge level about human papillomavirus associated with oropharyngeal cancer in ninth and tenth semester dentistry students. Method: Mixed, descriptive and applied research. A 20-question questionnaire was applied to 84 students from Universidad Regional Autónoma de Los Andes during October 2020-March 2021 period. Results: The average knowledge level was 38.94%, considered regular. Only 5% correctly identified oropharyngeal anatomy, 43% recognized that not all HPV genotypes are oncogenic, and 82% associated HPV-16 with oropharyngeal cancer. 80% consider it very important to know about this topic. Conclusions: Students present limited knowledge about the relationship between HPV and oropharyngeal cancer, evidencing the need to reinforce these contents in the academic curriculum.
