Effect of buffered lidocaine injection with sodium bicarbonate in dental practice [Efecto de la inyección de lidocaína tamponada con bicarbonato de sodio en la práctica odontológica]

Objective: To identify the effects of sodium bicarbonate-buffered lidocaine injection in dental practice. Method: Descriptive study through a literature review of specialised primary sources. Research studies from the last six years were analysed using databases such as PubMed, NCBI, and Google Scholar. Results: Lidocaine combined with sodium bicarbonate, regardless of the mixing proportions, demonstrated beneficial clinical effects such as a significant reduction in pain during injection and acceleration of the onset of anaesthesia. Alkalisation of the pH using sodium bicarbonate raises the acidic pH of the anaesthetic to approximately 6.55-7.30, resembling the physiological pH of oral tissues. Conclusions: Sodium bicarbonate-buffered lidocaine is a convenient and safe method that reduces injection pain and accelerates the onset of anaesthetic effect without compromising the pharmacological properties of the drug.
