Abstract

Objective: To determine the main theoretical supports available about tooth-supported complete overdenture as an alternative therapy to reduce tooth extractions and bone resorption caused by total edentulism. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted in LILACS, Medline, SCIELO, Latindex, Redalyc, PubMed and Science Direct databases, using specific descriptors about tooth-supported overdentures and non-conventional complete prostheses. Results: Oral rehabilitation through overdentures constitutes a preventive procedure that allows conservation of natural teeth, reduces bone loss from residual ridges by 50% during the first year and improves masticatory efficiency up to 88% compared to 30% of conventional complete dentures. Conclusions: Overdenture systems represent an economical, fast and conservative alternative to rehabilitate edentulous patients, providing greater retention, stability and satisfaction compared to conventional complete prostheses.
