Periodontal disease as a risk factor for premature birth [Enfermedad periodontal como factor de riesgo del parto prematuro]

Objective: Describe the main periodontal diseases that affect oral health in pregnant patients and their association with premature births. Method: Descriptive literature review using 28 scientific articles from the Scielo, Redalyc, PubMed, and Medigraphic databases, focusing on periodontal disease and pregnancy. Results: Periodontitis is a significant risk factor for premature births, with more than 18% of low birth weight births attributable to this condition. Subgingival microbial changes during pregnancy create bacterial reservoirs that affect the foetus-placenta unit. Untreated disease increases the risk of premature birth sixfold. Conclusions: Periodontal disease represents a modifiable risk factor for obstetric complications. Periodontal treatment before the 28th week of gestation is an essential preventive strategy to reduce perinatal morbidity.
