Myofunctional therapy: Comprehensive perspective in the stomatognathic system [Terapia miofuncional: Perspectiva integral en el sistema estomatognátic]

Objective: To identify the benefits of myofunctional therapy in correcting oral habits, malocclusions and their correlation with physiological changes in body posture, plantar footprint, breathing and swallowing. Method: Bibliographic review of digital resources from the last five years. 64 publications were selected, excluding 35 due to inclusion criteria. Finally, 29 publications were analyzed including systematic reviews, case reports, meta-analyses and pilot studies. Results: 89.7% of articles reported benefits of myofunctional therapy including muscle re-education, adequate lip seal, correction of swallowing and phonation. 83.3% showed favorable results when combined with orthopedics or orthodontics applied for a minimum of seven months. Improvement was evidenced in obstructive sleep apnea and correlation with body posture. Conclusions: Myofunctional therapy demonstrated efficacy in treating oral habits, malocclusions and respiratory alterations, providing muscle stability as a multidisciplinary complement in therapeutics.
