Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of acute kidney injury in COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital del Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social de Latacunga. Method: Descriptive observational, cross-sectional study with quantitative approach. 129 patients with confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis hospitalized between October 2020 and March 2021 were included. Sociodemographic variables, pathological history, creatinine and urinary output were analyzed using the AKIN scale. Results: 69% were men, 78% over 65 years old. The prevalence of acute kidney injury was 24% (31 patients). 48% presented AKIN type III, 16% creatinine >3 mg/dl and 76% anuric urinary output. Conclusions: The prevalence of acute kidney injury in critically ill COVID-19 patients is considerable, requiring close monitoring of renal function and optimization of therapeutic management.
