Abstract

Objective: To analyse serious systemic complications associated with the use of menstrual devices and contraceptive methods. Method: Systematic review of 15 scientific articles found in PubMed and Scopus. Results and conclusion: Serious systemic complications associated with the use of menstrual devices, particularly menstrual toxic shock syndrome, are highly serious clinical conditions that require early recognition and specialised management. Current scientific evidence shows that all types of intravaginal menstrual products may be associated with the development of MTSS, although there are significant differences in the risk profile between different devices.
