Abstract

Objective: To synthesise the available scientific evidence on the use of occlusal guards and orthodontic treatment in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Method: A systematic review was conducted, analysed according to the PRISMA method standards. Results and conclusion: TMD is related to psychological factors, malocclusions, or a history of orthodontic treatment. The connection between orthodontics and TMD is complex and is not considered a preventive or curative treatment. The evidence suggests that orthodontics has a neutral effect on TMJ. The therapeutic approach will depend on the diagnosis, with conservative methods such as occlusal splints being more common, which have proven to be effective, especially when combined with physiotherapy and orthodontics.
