Abstract

Objective: to describe apical periodontitis. Method: systematic review of 15 scientific articles in the population. Results and Conclusion: apical periodontitis (AP) is a chronic inflammatory disease of infectious origin which, in addition to compromising the periapical tissues, can have significant systemic implications due to the spread of inflammatory mediators and pathogens. Its multifactorial aetiology, involving microbial, immunological and genetic factors, highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to its management. Evidence suggests that AP can contribute to the development of systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, which underlines its relevance beyond the scope of dentistry.
