Abstract

Objective: to analyse the effectiveness of endodontic irrigants in the elimination of bacterial biofilms. Method: systematic review of a population of 15 scientific articles. Results and Conclusion: Although sodium hypochlorite is still the gold standard due to its powerful antimicrobial action and tissue dissolving capacity, its limited effectiveness in removing smear layer and its cytotoxicity have prompted research into alternatives such as chlorhexidine, MTAD, Tetraclean and Cetramide. These irrigants have demonstrated complementary properties, such as greater substantivity, lower surface tension and efficacy in the disintegration of biofilms, although their effectiveness varies according to clinical and experimental conditions.
