Abstract

Objective: Describe the cytological characteristics of keratinising squamous adenocarcinoma of the cervix. Method: Clinical case. Results: A 78-year-old female patient who had been menopausal for 25 years and had no previous cytology tests consulted for pelvic pain and heavy bleeding. Physical examination revealed a cervix with loss of anatomical architecture and a bleeding ulcerated lesion with a stony consistency. Cytological analysis revealed extensive haemorrhagic-necrotic changes with oval atrophic cells, marked anisonucleosis, hyperchromatism, irregular granular chromatin, multiple macronucleoli, hyperchromatic spindle cells, parakeratotic plaques, cerebroid nuclei, and cell syncytia with loss of polarity. The diagnosis confirmed keratinising squamous adenocarcinoma of the cervix. Conclusion: Timely diagnosis by trained professionals is essential for secondary prevention. HPV vaccination and elimination of risk factors are key primary prevention strategies.
